Under the leadership of Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb, the Alabama Judicial System (AJS) has been committed to making Alabama’s courts more efficient and accessible. Alabama is one of the first states in the nation to implement a statewide E-Filing court operation.
AlaFile is an online program that allows attorneys to electronically file court documents over the Internet by using a standard web browser. Once the desired documents are filed by the attorney, an electronic “case file” is automatically generated for the court clerk’s office. The clerk can then perform various case duties from within the AlaFile application, such as docketing motions or processing orders. The Judge can use the application to set hearings or rule on motions. With a subscription to Alacourt.com, any individual with an internet connection can access in-depth case information from the case file, including electronic images of filed documents and case action summaries.
AlaFile is already generating positive results for both litigants and the courts in Alabama. Nationwide, a vast number of courts and governmental agencies have experienced the benefits of a paperless system. Furthermore, consumers of government services are more frequently utilizing and demanding E-Filing options. The AJS will continue to improve accessibility to the courts in Alabama through improvements to an already superior, user-friendly E-Filing system.
