The Small Claims Court is a division of the District Court where individuals as well as businesses can settle disputes and disagreements. The maximum amount you may sue for is $6,000.00. Procedures are simple, informal and inexpensive. There are no juries and either party may appeal the judgment to Circuit Court.
Effective 2-1-2024 the plaintiff and defendant in a small claims case have an opportunity to RESOLVE their dispute online instead of physically appearing in court. At the present time only cases filed by attorneys and/or businesses are being processed through the ODR portal. Not all cases may be resolved through Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), if the parties do not come to common terms for a settlement or payment arrangement they can opt out of the process at any time and appear before the Judge. All you need to participate in the program is a computer, tablet or a smart cellphone device. No special app or software is required and no additional costs incurred.
